About Suncoast Care

WE BUILD HOPE

We build hope for the future by providing for the needs of our community today.
Physically – Spiritually – Emotionally

Suncoast Care assists in meeting the needs of our local community through our: community grocery store; soup kitchen ‘The Daily Bread’;  emergency relief program;  school pantries program; Christian life courses;  food rescue program;  coffee connect area;  donations to local community organisations and as a job-seeker host.

Through these successful programs we see in excess of 7000 people utilizing our services annually!  We are committed to providing food for our community by giving people a ‘hand up’ and not a ‘hand out’.  Our food is sourced from Foodbank, well known supermarkets, national distributors and a number of local farmers.

We are deeply grateful to all our sponsors, donors and supporters.

WE ARE

A not-for-profit charitable organization reaching the Sunshine Coast with food and aid.  As part of the Global Care Australia network, we are registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient.

Farmers who donate fruit and vegetables and donors of other items receive a tax deductible receipt for the value of the product.  Short dated items from distributors and manufacturers are welcome and we have refrigerated vehicles to collect donated items. Volunteers are always needed for all areas of service.

Community Grocery Store

Our goal is to build hope.  One way we do this is by providing practically for those in need.  Eligible low-income families and individuals can apply for membership and shop at our grocery store.  Many items are very low-cost and some are even free. Around a thousand shoppers visit our community grocery store each week.  Our friendly staff and volunteers are here to make our customers feel welcome. We stock a good range of fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, frozen products, and grocery items. It is always exciting to see what is new each week.  Our customers tell us they love shopping at Suncoast Care.

The Daily Bread - ‘soup’ kitchen

The Daily Bread offers a nutritious, three course meal in a safe and friendly environment. This is held two nights a week at the St Luke’s Luther Hall, 10 Sydney Street, Nambour.  The majority of the cooking for our ‘soup’ kitchen, The Daily Bread, is done by schools across the Sunshine Coast, with some even incorporating it into their curriculum! This gives students the opportunity to see the need in our community for themselves, and to be part of the solution.

We also donate food to two other soup kitchens on the Sunshine Coast and have a hand in providing 200 meals a week to those in need.

School Pantries Program

Suncoast Care provides food for more than fifteen schools each week. Much of the food for our School Pantries Program is sourced from Foodbank Queensland. They commissioned a report in 2015 called ‘Hunger in the Classroom’. The report highlights the issues of children in Australia going to school with empty stomachs. This has a far reaching impact on children, their schools and the wider community. Through our School Pantries Program Suncoast Care is meeting the needs of families in our community every day.

Food Rescue

We rescue 220 tons of food each year from nine supermarkets and fruit and vegetable shops. Approximately 50 tons of fruit and vegetables are donated by local farmers each year, and we collect over 600 tons of various food items from Foodbank in Brisbane and distribute them in the local community each year

Emergency Relief

We receive State Government funding and donate food and finances from our own resources to help those in crisis situations.  Those in need are referred to us by Centrelink and other agencies and the funds can be distributed through food vouchers or payment of utility bills.

Job Seeker Host

We are a highly successful ‘Job Seeker Host’ seeing many of our volunteers find work as a direct result of the experience they gain at Suncoast Care.  We build hope by providing valuable work experience in a positive environment.  Job seekers can learn a healthy work ethic for future employment.

Coffee Connect

Suncoast Care understands the value of a solid community which supports its members.  Friendship, and the ability to share life experiences and burdens with others, greatly enhances our quality of life.  This is why Suncoast Care places such high value on our Coffee Connect area which is located at the front of our grocery store.  We have created a friendly and welcoming environment where people can gather for a coffee and a chat.

Christian Life Courses

Suncoast Care provides physically through our food programs and we help with emotional support through the community we build.  We also believe that the Spiritual element of a person needs to be fed.  Therefore Suncoast Care places great value on our ability to provide members and workers practical and Spiritual encouragement through a variety of Christian life courses such as Alpha, parenting and budgeting.
